Authenticity

Authenticity is one of my favorite words.

So simple and beautiful and powerful. God is purely authentic. He tells us all the time who He is. We won't ever have to be surprised. This means the opposite is also true. Those that are far from God don't often reveal who they truly are. Conversely, they enshroud themselves in a murky cloud of deceit. They may say they are who you want to believe they are, but their words do not match their actions. This is one of the ways they expose themselves.

The scriptures teach "...by their fruits ye shall know them." - Matthew 7:20

Why does it matter?

The answer to that depends on where you are going, and yes, I'm talking about heaven or hell. We are taught that we are judged by our thoughts as well as our actions. So our words had better line up with our deeds. This is my definition of being authentic, to live honestly with who we are.

So the answer is, it matters because it determines our ultimate destiny. Who we are becomes manifest in what we do, and both of those combined determine where we go from here.

The reason I started this with God is because He is our ultimate example. We came here originally to learn to be like Him. Some have sadly defaulted and gone to play for the other team, but the sad news is, that team is losing.....

God is who He is partly because He's authentic. He is who He says He is one hundred percent of the time!!! None of us could yet say that about ourselves, but we can all strive for it. Life is a journey toward perfection. It is an ongoing process that takes a lot of perseverance and patience and dedication. But it also requires honesty.

Many people don't recognize small breaches of honesty, and I'm telling you, they all add up. When we say we're going to do something but don't follow through, that's dishonest. Imagine God doing that. It's impossible. And it wouldn't work. The entire world would fold in and cease to exist.

God holds the entire world in perfect balance and we owe everything to Him. That is a lot of responsibility! Can you imagine if He "forgot" to set the sun in motion one day? We would freeze to death. If He missed a season and we went a whole year without a harvest? What if He didn't follow through and send the rain? How long could we make it without water? We are all down here surviving because of Him. If He were not authentic, we truly could not exist.

I know I'm talking about responsibility, but aren't the two connected? Authenticity and Responsibility? God would cease to be God the instant He ceased to be authentic and we would no longer exist. That is something to be forever grateful for because God is responsible. He is authentic. And He holds this entire beautiful universe together in His trusted hands. Let's be grateful to Him today and find ways to be even a little more like Him.

Go make a good day.

Every Vacuum Tells a Story

It’s two days after Christmas. Actually, if you want to get technical, it’s only December 21st. My kids and I celebrated early before they left to spend the week with their dad. This year it’s his holiday and whenever that happens we celebrate before they go. I sit on the floor surrounded by opened presents, cardboard packaging, leftover twine and shiny Christmas bows. Stockings and their contents spill out all over the rug and couches. Despite my best efforts to keep up, I continue to find remnants of beautiful Santa wrapping paper, sheets of colorful tissue paper and a stray gift bag. I return most of the gifts to each of my kids’ rooms noting each small pile and reflecting on the influence minimalism has already started to take on my life. There isn’t any “junk.” My kids have had a wonderful Christmas and are thrilled with their gifts but there isn’t an excess. There was nothing purchased “just to have something to open.” I was very careful to be intentional about each item we broug...

Dominican Garlic Chicken Spaghetti

Garlic. Oregano. Cheese. Spaghetti like you’ve never imagined it. It’s not red, it’s orange, and it explodes inside your mouth with flavors that are clearly not Italian. They’re Dominican.  When my brother brought his wife over from the Dominican Republic, he brought her food with her. She didn’t wait a day to begin cooking, and I’ve never known anyone to be so comfortable no matter what kitchen they’re in.  This is so alike the spaghetti you’ve had and yet so different. To the best of my ability to recreate it, here is how it’s done:  Boil pasta until it is al dente. Heat olive oil and gently sauté several cloves of fresh garlic (do not mince; mashing is essential for authentic spaghetti). Add tomato sauce or paste, oregano, a little milk, cooked chicken and grated cheese to taste. Combine with pasta and salt to taste. Serve with salad. Bueno!

Things

Thoughts. Thoughts are things. Thoughts are things, because thoughts become things. Think about your thoughts. What you think about you bring about.  Things are thoughts.  Thoughts.
